Kyle’s a good man. And an excellent friend. From what we’ve seen of the Ramseys so far, I think it’s probably for the best that Kyle stepped in when he did. I don’t think David could have easily made his own decision while stuck in the middle of those two.
Kyle was intended to be both the guy no sane parent would let their kid hang out with and the only thing that has kept David sane these past years. An escape rather than a role model. And as pointed out before, David didn’t need a role model.
However, to an outsider on the situation, there is no reason Kyle should have gotten involved. He had no business doing so as any issues were between David and his parents. And some would even go as far as to say whatever the parents say go. That David should not even have a say being the ‘child’. It’s just that after a certain age, the law says differently.
I understand that, from an outsider’s perspective, that is correct. It’s that sort of ‘doesn’t directly involve me so I have no business in it’ mindset. With inside information, it becomes apparent it’s much more complex than that. Leaving David to work things out with his parents on his own wouldn’t have ended well.
It feels like the situation that pops up with friends….their bad relationships are technically none of your business, as an outsider, but as a friend, you tend to want to give advice and help anyways, right?
I also note the use of the term ‘sane parent’. I’m not too clear on his dad, but I don’t think David’s mother falls under that category. Not from what we’ve seen and heard so far. Of course, this also falls under the grey area of the definition of child. David’s still a teenager, but is he a ‘child’ or is he considered legally capable of formulating his own decisions yet? (I would also like to thank you for the comic as a whole and allowing me to speak to you or at all about the characters like this. The whole thing is really awesome. Thanks for all your hard work.)
The use of sane parent comes with perception vs reality here. Any normal parent would see Kyle as a bad influence and wouldn’t want their kids hanging around him. Doesn’t matter what he’s actually like. Kinda like a parent shielding their child from a foul mouthed, tattooed biker man. Guy could be the kindest man in the world, but you can’t get past the image.
As far as referring to David as a child, again comes to perspective. Whether it’s the fact that he’s under 18 or the mind set of always obey your parents, whether your 10 or 30, your parents win by default (5th commandment level obedience here). The latter will view David as being in the wrong no matter what.
(And not a problem at all. Live character talk as well.)
